NewSETA empowered the Moselinyane and Maputsoe constituencies to hold their political office bearers accountable. The organization informed the community on the functions of councilors and parliamentarians, and raised awareness on the need for the community to demand improved service delivery by holding their leaders accountable under the theme “Accountability Matters!”
The organization brought together the councilors and community members to pave the way for sustainable engagement on public accountability.
The community selected representatives to undergo intensive training which would equip them with skills to hold their leaders accountable and liaise with the community by aggregating their demands and of utmost importance, regularly reporting back to them. The committee was trusted by the community to represent it in ensuring that the elected representatives remain answerable to them and meaningfully represents them in parliament.
Meanwhile, Mr Nkole Letuka, a former parliamentarian, enlightened the community about the functions of parliamentarians. He stressed the need to demand accountability based on the established constitutional functions of the parliamentarians instead of what the community often demands. He dissuaded the community from raising irrelevant demands outside the mandate of the elected representatives but rather hold them accountable based on their functions and promises.
